There is something on my mind and I need to talk it over with Jesus. I glance over to my passenger seat as I drive and notice four packages of rice cake rolls lying there. I brought the kids a healthy snack for when I pick them up from school. There's also an empty pack of bubble tape on the seat. Leftovers from a Valentine's Day gift.
I quickly remove each item and place it elsewhere as I keep my eyes on the road in attempts to avoid an accident. Once the seat is clear I invite Jesus in the car and we begin our conversation.
I frequently declutter the front seat for Jesus. There's something that shifts in the atmosphere when I physically make room for Him—as if He is really there with me, because He is. It helps me focus my brain when every time I look to my left I see an empty seat where He can sit.
It may seem silly for me to clear a seat for Jesus, but I believe there is a spiritual parallel. Often, we ask Jesus to be a part of our lives. We desire Him to encompass our days with His presence.
Yet how many times, when He arrives, are our lives so cluttered that there is no room for Him to sit—spiritually speaking.
He walks in ready to meet with us only to find us busy with what is demanding our attention rather than catering to His arrival. In the spiritual realm, it's like we have rice cake rolls covering His place in the room. Bubble gum tape trash is hanging off the side of the seat with fresh yogurt stains caking each arm rest. All while we are driving seventy miles an hour on a packed expressway!
I'm sure He'd love to sit down and spend time with us, but there are other "things" taking His place. It's in these moments where I sense Him gently asking me to lovingly notice that He is there—to declutter and focus on Him.
All He's asking is for us to slow down and get rid of some items that are vying for our attention so we can place our focus on Him.
I don't know about you, but I'm ready to spiritually clear the seat for Jesus this week. To make room for Him physically and spiritually. To declutter so I can cherish the most important person in the room, Jesus.
